Independence and Freedom form the precursors of Authentic Business
As I begin to write this post, in the USA tomorrow is Independence Day. There is a big build up in the good ‘ole USA as we approach this holiday. We have parades and barbecue, concerts and fireworks. We are commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, declaring independence from Great Britain. It is essentially a celebration of the birth of the United States of America. The resonance of Independence and Freedom rings throughout the month of July.
Beyond the festivities, the motto and meaning of independence and freedom are not often deeply contemplated. In my personal world, Independence/Freedom is one of the top three core values. This value forms the foundation of my decision making in all things, for I believe that people have the inalienable right to choose.
You get to choose your life in the sense that no one can tell you what to think or how to respond to circumstance. Though you do not choose the situation into which you were born, you have more choice than most people realize on how you progress from there.
You chose to Launch a business. You choose daily to Hustle and grow that dream into a viable and impactful reality. If you align with the value of Independence, then your authentic business foundation and structure will not be built on someone else’s ideas of what is best, but on you gathering all the data and making your own decisions.
A few years ago I started following a mentor in the world of “marketing your coaching business and easily earning six figures”. Initially I was attracted by the system she taught for automating and earning. Over time I found the methods began to feel inauthentic to me. I was nervous. This was not the authentic business I was dreaming of. When perusing social media it appeared that the most successful coaches were using similar systems and methods. I plugged away incorporating my mentor’s ideas into my marketing, though I wasn’t feeling good about my business and wasn’t seeing the success I expected.
The first time I met this mentor in person at their live workshop, I had a light bulb moment. The energy felt totally wrong. Something was off, though on the surface the event was classy and well organized. There were missing speakers and the content was surface – no different than the online courses. It did not feel like authentic business but instead like marketing mumbo jumbo. I thought I was alone in my perceptions until after, when others who attended mirrored my feelings.
At that moment I realized that I had been ignoring what I knew to be my authentic truth, and that is why my business was not joyful and not growing as quickly as expected. From that point forward, I stopped worrying about other coaches “signature systems” and “six figure magic methods” and started doing what I do best. I focused back onto my unique value as a teacher, coach and speaker. I re-connected with relationships instead of automation. I trusted all my years of professional experience and marketing success and went with what I knew in my heart was the correct path for the growth of my authentic business.
Opportunity came out of the woodwork and knocked on my door, over and over again. Joy returned to my day to day actions. Expansiveness replaced contraction. I was reminded that the core value of “independence/freedom” includes the freedom to trust NOT following in someone else’s footsteps, but instead trusting in your own best path.
I tend to “preach” about authenticity often.
Who are you really?
What do you stand for?
Know the answer to these two questions and your life and business will blossom authentically, for you have the freedom to live an authentic life – even in the worst of circumstances. Authors like Viktor Frankl show us how the mind can be free, even when the body is enslaved. “Even in the degradation and abject misery of a concentration camp, Frankl was able to exercise the most important freedom of all – the freedom to determine one’s own attitude and spiritual well-being.”
Most reading this will not be enslaved in a bodily sense, though I know many are stuck within the confining walls of their own stale beliefs and old life stories. I invite you to peek outside the box – to step boldly forward into your most authentic life and build your authentic business. Celebrate the concept of Freedom and Independence within your own perceptions and let your authenticity infuse your business.
